Inspiration

Inspiration can come from anywhere. The rough at the golf course can be a beautiful place if I forget about how many strokes I’ve taken. The crumbling ice at the shore of a lake is particularly brilliant in the sunshine. The magic of a tumultuous sky stops me every time. The vibrancy of the glass itself sometimes tells me what it wants to be.

Often, all it takes is an association to a colour to create an image. Blue is winter, purple is spring, green is summer and orange is fall.

In addition to the natural world, sometimes a word sets me off in a new direction; tumultuous,
crepuscular, serendipitous, debauchery. The connotations of these words evoke fantastic imagery.

As someone who loves to learn, I dive into new techniques even as I am finding a voice in on edge
construction and working deep. My newer, more literal pieces combine a painterly technique that gives a watercolour feel to my work.

When I am stuck, a quote from an established artist reminds me of the shared experience of creating art. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Every artist was first an amateur.”

There is also a shared experience as a viewer of art. The grace and talent of artists of every medium inspire me to become a better artist. I continually marvel at what creative people can produce. And, by the way, every single human being is creative. We each have our way of expressing creativity.
